The Comforter

John 14:16-18

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:  “And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.”  John 14:16 (KJV)

Our two dogs and our cat all sleep in our bedroom, a dog on either side of the bed and our cat at the foot of the bed.  We have known much trial and tribulation and frequently have difficulty sleeping.  When we are troubled, the  animals can sense the tension.  The dogs move closer to the bed and the cat walks to our pillows, depositing himself between our heads and offering his comforting purrs and soft fur as consolation for our woes.

When Christ ascended to God the Father, he sent the disillusioned and depressed  disciples a comforter – the Holy Spirit – to wipe away their sadness.  In like manner, we, as Christians, can offer our support to those who mourn or are consumed with concern.  Be a comforter for Christ!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, as you sent the Holy Spirit to be a comforter to the disciples, let us always be ready to comfort and support those who need uplifting of their spirits.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
