Religion and Politics

I Timothy 2:1-7

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: “First of all, then, I urge that entities and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” I Timothy 2: 1, 2 (NASB)

During political campaigns—which seem never-ending as we have local, primary and national elections annually, if not more frequently—we are subjected to political ads which sometimes tell us what the candidate stands for, what he or she has accomplished, and what positive programs the candidate’s election will bring to constituents. But all too often, in the heat of the campaign, one candidate begins attacks on the opponent. In defense, the accused candidate slings mud in the opposite direction, and the positive turns to negative as candidates attempt to be the lesser of two evils!

As Christians, do we ever find ourselves concentrating on negatives rather than promoting the positives? The political statement we should make is through what we are willing to do to promote good will and the love of Christ our Savior.  Anything less would be politically incorrect!

PRAYER: Lord, as we participate in the political process, let us never forget what a blessing it is, and that our prayers help to sanctify both its importance and its results.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
