A Place at the Table

At its July meeting, the 2013-14 BVCC Leadership Circle was challenged to develop a theme for the coming year. The assignment for the August meeting was to discern a phrase, passage of scripture or meditation that spoke to where members hear God calling us to mission and ministry. At the subsequent meeting, each member brought what he or she discerned during the month. Each had a thoughtful suggestion, but one theme resonated above the others. It was found in the hymn “A Place at the Table” that our music director, Rhonda Frisbee introduced during worship earlier in the year. Members agreed that it defined who we heard God calling us to be in a time of change as our church transitioned from one place of worship to another. We chose it for its inclusiveness, its call to be just and to work for reconciliation. We liked the way it challenged us to follow Jesus in ways that are difficult. At the September meeting, we meditated on a line that produced hard discussion:For just and unjust, a place at the table. Abuser, abused, with need to forgive, in anger, in hurt, a mind-set of mercy, for just and unjust, a new way to live. As a participant in our faith community, what speaks to you in this hymn as you read its lyrics?
For everyone born, a place at the table
For everyone born, clean water and bread
A shelter, a space, a safe place for growing
For everyone born, a star overhead
And God will delight
When we are creators of justice and joy.
Yes, God will delight
When we are creators of justice,
Justice and joy.
For woman and man, a place at the table
Revising the roles, deciding the share
With wisdom and grace, dividing the power
For woman and man, a system that's fair
And God will delight
When we are creators of justice and joy.
Yes, God will delight
When we are creators of justice,
Justice and joy.
For young and for old, a place at the table
A voice to be heard, a part in the song
The hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled
For young and for old, the right to belong
And God will delight
When we are creators of justice and joy.
Yes, God will delight
When we are creators of justice,
Justice and joy.
For just and unjust, a place at the table
Abuser, abused, with need to forgive
In anger, in hurt, a mindset of mercy
For just and unjust, a new way to live
And God will delight
When we are creators of justice and joy.
Yes, God will delight
When we are creators of justice,
Justice and joy.
For everyone born, a place at the table
To live without fear, and simply to be
To work, to speak out, to witness and worship
For everyone born, the right to be free
And God will delight
When we are creators of justice and joy.
Yes, God will delight
When we are creators of justice,
Justice and joy.
And God will delight
When we are creators of justice and joy.
Yes, God will delight
When we are creators of justice,
Justice and joy.
