Prayer for Young Adults

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) recently celebrated Young Adult Week from February 6th - 13th.  As part of that celebration the Young Adult Commission provided a week of devotionals on their blog at http://docyac.wordpress.com.  There was also a commission member who provided a prayer to end the week.  The prayer touched me personally because it shares my feelings of hope, love, and acceptance that I have for the young adult ministry of this church.  I read this prayer at the end of our last Connect worship service and I now want to share it again here.

Because I Said So!

Exodus 3:13-15

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: “God said to Moses ‘I am who I am’; and he said ‘Thus you will say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you’.”  Exodus 3:14

As a child, I frequently asked for reasoning – clarification, perhaps – behind my father’s commands to me.  Usually, in his wisdom, he shared with me the reason why he asked me to perform a task.  But on occasion, he would answer the question “Why?” with a simple “Because I said so!”

Is Prayer Enough?

Historian Jill Lepore reminds her readers in “The Whites of Their Eyes: The Tea Party’s Revolution and the Battle over American History,” of the wry humor and parody employed by Benjamin Franklin to make his points. She references this proverb from Franklin’s “Poor Richard’s Almanac”: “Serving God is Doing good to Man, but Praying is thought an easier Service, and therefore more generally chosen.” His lampoon aimed at religious hypocrisy unfortunately struck me right between the eyes.
