Habitat for Humanity Work Day

Habitat for Humanity Kansas City is a non-profit Christian based ministry working to fulfill the dream of home ownership for low-income families in greater Kansas City.  Since 1979 they have built more than 200 homes!  You can find out more on their website at: http://www.habitatkc.org.  You can help BVCC support this project in two ways.

Volunteer on November 18th, 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM
We are going to be volunteering on a weekday since that is Habitat KC's greatest need right now.  I am hosting this volunteer event through Serve Kansas City.  I currently have six open volunteer spots that I hope BVCC can help me fill.

Volunteers are expected to work the full day schedule.   Everyone needs to arrive promptly to allow time for sign in, house assignment, task distribution and the morning safety meeting.  Once I know the exact location I will notify those who have signed up.

The typical schedule is as follows:

  • 8:00am - Arrive on site, sign in, turn in forms.
  • 11:30am - Lunch break (1/2 hour lunch break onsite; see below)
  • 3:30pm - Workday ends

Many things determine work progress - what needs to be done, what the volunteers ahead of you accomplished, and what supplies are available. Therefore, we can not forecast what work you will be doing before you arrive.  In addition, the weather can cause alteration, and sometimes cancellation, of planned activities.  If there’s a question about weather on the morning of your work day, call 816-924-1096 ext 101 AFTER 7:15 am.  If there’s no voice message, the work day is still going ahead as planned.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work on the construction site.Hydration is very important when working both inside and out.   Water and ice will be provided on the job site.  Please bring a personal refillable water bottle.

All volunteers need to provide their own work gloves and wear sturdy close-toed shoes. Other than that, Habitat KC will provide most tools needed for construction tasks, including safety glasses, hard hats, etc.  However, due to their limited supply of tools, we encourage you to bring your own tools if possible.  A good general tool belt to bring would include a hammer, level, tape measure, pencil, speed square, and box knife.  Please mark your personal tools clearly so they don’t get mistaken for others when cleaning up at the end of the day.  Habitat KC will also gladly accept tool donations.

Provide Lunch for Habitat Volunteers
Lunch will be served between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM.  We will hopefully have a group of around ten volunteers between BVCC and Serve KC.  Providing lunch to the volunteers is a big help and offers them a well deserved break.  Lunch will need to be served at the project site and will need to be prepared beforehand.  There will be no prep area and there may not even be electricity or wash water readily available.

You can RSVP to either opportunity by just sending me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  Thanks for considering this mission opportunity to serve our community!
