Harvesters Event Fun For All - Doing it Again!

Nancy Boyer, Karen Slater, Harold Zimmerman and I all volunteered our time on Saturday,  July 16th at Harvester’s. We sorted water, juice, sport’s drinks, soda, and other beverages into boxes that would be shipped out to the agencies that Harvesters supports.  There was a washing station, weighing & labeling station, and pallets for the boxes that had completed the process.   A lot of teamwork was involved and by the end of our two hour shift we had everything sorted, just in time for two more enormous bins of beverages to be wheeled in for the next group.  Watching everyone work together to complete what seemed like a colossal task was fun.  The only discouraging thing was seeing all that Margarita mix being thrown away!

The volunteer group also included 3 of my co-workers and 2 other members from Serve Kansas City.  Harvesters is the area's only food bank and their network includes over 620 nonprofit agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes, etc (http://www.harvesters.org).

I will be going back to Harvesters this coming Thursday, August 18th and we will volunteer from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.  We never know what we will be doing until we get there.  You can see all the event details here: Harvesters Food Sort. Serve Kansas City in an online social group that meets to serve the Kansas City community through volunteering their time.  I serve as an organizer for the group and plan to continue offering volunteer opportunities to BVCC through Serve Kansas City.  My hope is that Nancy and I can grow this partnership through our own Mission Connection Center.

Many thanks to those that participated on July 16th and for those who RSVP for the 18th!
